The Missouri General Assembly is following through on a major priority not only for the governor, but for the betterment of all Missouri. On Monday, the Missouri Senate passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 14, which would authorize the state to issue more than $300 million in bonds to address some of our state’s transportation needs. This important funding would allow MoDOT to repair or replace more than 200 bridges across our state that need immediate attention. Many of these bridges are in rural Missouri.
Sending this resolution to the Missouri House of Representatives comes after much dialogue and compromise, because there are some lawmakers who do not like the idea of using general revenue dollars, while others are against the idea of using bonds to pay for the repairs. While the final product is different than the original bill, I believe the compromise reached on the issue is a quality piece of legislation. We will now see what the Missouri House does with this plan, with only a month left in session.
We also have a few weeks until the Fiscal Year 2020 budget needs to be completed. The Missouri Senate is likely to take this up when we return from Easter break on April 23. By law, we are required to have the budget sent to the governor by 6 p.m. on Friday, May 10.
