Senator Tony Luetkemeyer Discusses Runaway Taxes with Assessors
JEFFERSON CITY — State Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer, R-Parkville, recently met with representatives of the Missouri State Assessors Association to discuss unexpected property tax increases experienced by many Missourians. The meeting, which was also attended by one other member of the Missouri Senate, provided an opportunity to encourage county assessors to better inform citizens of upcoming assessment changes and limit the rate of increase.
“I appreciate the willingness of Missouri’s county assessors to meet with senators and hear our concerns about rising property tax assessments,” Sen. Luetkemeyer said. “We had a productive discussion, and the assessors were receptive to many of the remedies being considered for the upcoming legislative session.”
In June, residents of Platte County received last-minute notices of increased property taxes, leaving many property owners with little time to appeal higher assessments. Local officials eventually extended the deadline for appeals, but the incident highlighted the need for timely communication from assessors.
During the meeting, Sen. Luetkemeyer called on county assessors to do a better job providing notice of assessment changes and offer residents sufficient time to appeal these decisions. He also stressed the need to consider ways to prevent runaway tax increases by limiting the rate of change to property assessment valuations.
