Missouri Students to Receive Help with Career Readiness Through Legislative Provision

Passed by Senator Jill Schupp

JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri students will soon have a clearer path toward a future career thanks to legislation recently passed by the General Assembly that includes a provision sponsored by State Sen. Jill Schupp, D-Creve Coeur, creating the Career Readiness Course Task Force.

“Students today will fill the jobs of tomorrow,” said Sen. Jill Schupp. “To make sure they are getting the education they need to open doors of opportunity later in life, we need to help students navigate these important decisions while they’re still in school.”

Under this legislation, the Missouri State Board of Education will create a Career Readiness Course Task Force to develop a potential course for 8th and 9th grade students covering topics related to various career and educational opportunities. Topics that could be covered include the potential to earn college credits at a discounted rate while in high school through dual credit/dual enrollment programs; taking advantage of A+ and other scholarship programs; researching post-secondary education opportunities; and ACT or SAT preparation.

This provision, originally included in legislation sponsored by Sen. Schupp, was included in the final version of Senate Bill 894 & 921 which passed both chambers of the Missouri General Assembly with bipartisan support.
