Sen. Caleb Rowden’s Legislative Column for the Week of Feb. 4, 2019

Sen. Schatz, Sen. Rowden and Terry Roberts, President of Welcome Home

The Senate’s annual charity bowling tournament was held Monday night at Capital Bowl in Jefferson City. This year, we raised money for Welcome Home, an organization in Columbia that works to restore veterans’ lives after their service to our country. Their mission is to end veteran homelessness and empower homeless and at risk veterans to return to society as productive citizens. I am proud to say that we raised over $11,000 for Welcome Home. It was a wonderful event, and I am glad that the Senate family was able to come together and raise an incredible amount of money for a very important cause.

Sen. Rowden with FFA member Ryan Siegel

Tuesday, Feb. 5, was FFA (Future Farmer of America) Day at the Capitol, and I had the pleasure of meeting with one of my constituents, Ryan Siegel. He is a member of the Otterville FFA program. This day gives FFA members a chance to visit the Capitol and learn more about how their state government functions. FFA is an incredibly important program that teaches students about agriculture and cultivates their leadership skills. This organization is especially important for Missouri, as agriculture is our biggest industry. I appreciate the hard work of FFA students and applaud their commitment to agriculture  education.

Sen. Rowden with Chancellor Cartwright

I also had the privilege of meeting with the chancellor of the University of Missouri, Alexander Cartwright. I enjoyed meeting with him and discussing the recent sanctions placed on the university by the NCAA. During session this week, I shared my opinion on this issue. Mizzou was quick to report the violation when it was discovered, but the sanctions placed against the university are much harsher than those given to schools who were found to have committed more serious violations. I believe the NCAA should be consistent when determining punishments for policy violations. The sanctions placed against the university will cause a massive loss of revenue, and it further punishes future programs and student athletes who had no part in violating the NCAA’s academic tutor guidelines. I support Chancellor Cartwright and trust his leadership as the university navigates this situation.
