Sen. Dan Hegeman’s Capitol Report for the Week of Jan. 14, 2019

Beginning a New Legislative Session

The Missouri General Assembly officially began the 2019 legislative session on Wednesday, Jan. 9. On the Senate side, we are proud to welcome nine new senators following the results of the November election. We also have several returning members, including myself, who recently won re-election to a second term, as well as a new leadership team and a few newly selected committee chairs. It’s great to get back to working for the people of Missouri, and I wish all of my colleagues the best of luck in the coming session. I’m excited about what we can accomplish this year to make our state a better place to live and work.

I am specifically looking forward to working alongside the governor and his office this year. The executive branch has expressed great interest in engaging with the Legislature and its members over the coming months. I believe we will be able to work together in finding solutions to the problems Missouri faces. I support the governor on many of his initiatives, including his interests of enhancing workforce development and improving state infrastructure. I appreciate the effort he has made to move our state forward and his willingness to work with the General Assembly to achieve positive results.

During the legislative session, the General Assembly will look to address several different issues, not least of which is our state’s underfunded transportation network. State government has an obligation to make sure our roads and bridges are safe and reliable. However, any increase in transportation funding should have broad consensus. I am dedicated to evaluating possible solutions to this problem and others over the course of the legislative session.
