Sen. Mike Bernskoetter’s Legislative Column for the Week of Dec. 23, 2019

The Spirit of Giving

Well, another year has come and gone, and Christmastime is finally here. Our community has been through a lot over the past year, with tornado and flood recovery efforts still ongoing. The year has certainly posed its challenges, but as I look back on 2019, I am inspired by what I see: the spirit of giving.

The spirit of giving is often regrettably relegated to the month of December, but I saw it throughout the year. When our community needed help, we offered it, without hesitation. I hope we carry this forward into the new year and the years after that. Because it’s what we should do. Giving back to those in need no matter the season. I hope we remember the less fortunate among us this Christmas season, and find ways to give back any way we can.

As 2019 comes to an end, the 2020 legislative sessions draws closer and closer. During session, I will work to pass legislation allowing deer jerky to be donated to local food pantries. This shelf-stable, protein-packed meat is greatly needed in our state, because food pantries and needy families often struggle to provide adequate cold storage for meat donations. By working to pass this legislation, I believe we can celebrate the season of giving well into the new year.

I wish each of you and your family a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
