Legislative Column for Sept. 28, 2018
| Over the past week, I have had some wonderful opportunities to visit and enjoy numerous events happening in our community.
On Sept. 22, I visited a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall while it was in Ava. This was the only stop in Missouri for the traveling wall this year, and I am so grateful for the invitation to attend the event from the Douglas County Veterans Memorial Association. I also visited the traveling wall when it was in Jefferson City as well as the memorial in Washington, D.C. Each time I have viewed the wall has been an incredibly moving and emotional experience, and this time was no different. The 58,000 names on the wall, including 1,422 from Missouri, commemorate the lives and sacrifices of those who fought for this country during a troubling time. When I look at the wall, it brings into sharp focus the memories of the friends I lost during the conflict. I know I will never forget them as long as I live. Again, I deeply appreciated the opportunity to attend the event, to meet my fellow veterans and to pay respects to our fallen countrymen and women. It was truly an honor. I encourage all Missourians to visit the traveling wall when the opportunity presents itself and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in the nation’s capital if you get the chance. On Sept. 26, I was able to attend the dedication and ribbon cutting of the Hass-Darr Hall at Missouri State University – West Plains. This 18,000 square foot facility formerly served as the West Plains Post Office, but now promises to house important campus services, such as the Darr Honors Program, the Carol Silvey Student Union, tutoring services and even additional classroom space. I am excited to see the University continue to grow, while it works to meet the needs of the students throughout our community. I also participated in the Gainesville Hootin’ and Hollarin’ Parade. The parade was a great success, and I enjoyed meeting and visiting with members of our community. As always, I appreciate it when groups from around Missouri and from our community back home come to visit me at the Capitol.
