Greetings,
The Missouri General Assembly has officially convened for the start of the 2019 legislative session. On Wednesday, Jan. 9, lawmakers returned to the State Capitol for the first day of session. Following the November election, the Senate was proud to welcome eight newly elected senators, who took the oath of office in front of their families, friends and legislative colleagues. Joining them were nine returning senators, elected in November to serve a second four-year term.
The first few weeks of the legislative session are about preparation. The Senate adopted procedural rules for the session and began the process of introducing bills and referring them to legislative committees. These committees are sub-groups of lawmakers who evaluate bills on a certain subject before they reach the full Senate for debate. Committees often hold hearings on specific bills where private citizens can voice their support or concern for each proposal. If the Legislature is currently considering a bill that is important to you, I encourage you to travel to Jefferson City to make your voice heard. You can visit the Missouri Senate website for a .
This year, I have the great pleasure of serving on six of the Senate’s standing committees:
- Appropriations
- Gubernatorial Appointments
- Agriculture, Food Production and Outdoor Resources
- Administration
- Transportation, Infrastructure and Public Safety
- Progress and Development (where I am vice-chairwoman)
Additionally, I have already filed several bills on various issues. In the coming months, I hope to see these bills through the various steps of the legislative process.
