Senator Karla May Presents Pawpaw Tree Bill to Senate Committee
JEFFERSON CITY — State Sen. Karla May, D-St. Louis, presented legislation creating a new state symbol, the state fruit tree. Senate Bill 210 designates the pawpaw tree as Missouri’s state fruit tree. The pawpaw is native to Missouri and produces the largest edible fruit found naturally in North America. The legislation was initially proposed by fourth grade students from New City School in St. Louis two years ago.
“I am so impressed by the persistent efforts of these students,” said Sen. May. “I have loved working with these kids, and it has been a highlight of my time in the Legislature. I think it is wonderful that these young people are engaging with lawmakers and trying to make a difference. I look forward to working with them and other members in the Senate to pass this legislation.”
Senate Bill 210 was heard in the Senate’s General Laws Committee. Senator May has previously sponsored similar legislation while serving in the Missouri House of Representatives.
