Senator Tony Luetkemeyer Fulfills Terms of Football Challenge

JEFFERSON CITY — State Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer, R-Parkville, has fulfilled an obligation to a Senate colleague following a Sept. 5 football match-up between two northwest Missouri athletic rivals. During the extraordinary legislative session called by the governor, Sen. Luetkemeyer stood in the Senate chamber to congratulate the victor and recite the fight song of the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State University.

Senator Tony Luetkemeyer reads the Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats fight song in the Missouri Senate chamber to fulfill a legislative district rivalry wager with Sen. Dan Hegeman.

The recitation followed a pre-game wager between Sen. Luetkemeyer and his legislative district neighbor, Sen. Dan Hegeman, R-Cosby. The NWMSU Bearcats, Sen Hegeman’s home team, defeated the Griffons of Missouri Western University, which are based in Sen. Luetkemeyer’s senatorial district.

“I knew going into the game that the Griffons were underdogs against the Division II champion Bearcats, but I was willing to take the chance in the spirit of friendly competition,” Sen. Luetkemeyer said. “It turns out that Missouri Western almost pulled it off.”

The Griffons led the game during the third quarter but the Northwest Missouri State squad rallied in the final minutes to win the game 45-35. True to his word, Sen. Luetkemeyer accepted his comeuppance and read the fight song of Sen. Hegeman’s team aloud.

“I very much enjoyed relishing in the victory, but it was all in good fun,” Sen. Hegeman said. “We’re both very proud of our institutions of higher education. The wager magnified the enjoyment of the game and the pride we have in both institutions in the great northwest part of the state.”
