State Sen. Shalonn “Kiki” Curls to Host 13th Annual Kansas City Public Health and Safety Fair
JEFFERSON CITY — State Sen. Shalonn “Kiki” Curls, D-Kansas City, will host the 13th Annual Kansas City Public Health and Safety Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 13. The event, an effort to reduce health disparities in the minority community by providing access to preventive resources, will take place at Founder’s Plaza in Arrowhead Stadium.
There is no cost to participate in the fair, which offers health screenings, student sports physicals, immunizations and more to those in attendance. Vendors will distribute safety devices, such as bicycle helmets and smoke detectors, in addition to administering free diabetes and blood pressure screenings, dental checks, eye exams and breast exams. The fair will also include food concessions and bicycle giveaways.
The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority will offer free transportation to and from Arrowhead Stadium for the event. A list of pick-up times and locations is available at healthandsafetyfair.com/transportation.
Individuals whose income is less than 185 percent of the federal poverty level, and who provide documentation to verify their income, are eligible for a free car booster seat. Accepted documentation includes: a Temporary Assistance for Needy Families letter, a food stamp letter, Medicaid documentation, a Social Security letter, a pay stub and an unemployment determination letter.
Senator Curls is excited to bring back the long-running Public Health and Safety Fair for another year.
“This event is truly one of my favorite traditions,” Sen. Curls said. “Studies show preventive care is a key component to leading a healthy and productive life. That’s what the Public Health and Safety Fair is all about: providing an opportunity for residents of Kansas City to improve their quality of life. I hope anyone in need of a helpful hand, whether big or small, young or old, is able to attend this year’s event. Bring your family, bring your friends, and let’s make this another great year for the Public Health and Safety Fair!”
Many Kansas City organizations have come together to support this year’s event, including the fair’s partners: the Kansas City Police Department, the Black Health Care Coalition, the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority and Truman Medical Centers.
