Current Bill Summary

SB 997 - Under this act, any seven-director school district, or any urban school district, may divide into subdistricts and provide for the election of subdistrict board members as set forth in the act.

Prior to December 1 of any calendar year immediately preceding the general municipal election day in the year in which a vote to divide the school district will be held, the election authority of the county in which the school district is located shall divide the school district into seven subdistricts of contiguous and compact territory, and as nearly equal in population as practicable. Such proposal shall be placed before the voters of the district for approval. Within six months after each decennial census is reported to the President of the United States, the election authority shall reapportion the subdistricts to be as nearly equal in population as practicable.

This act sets forth residency requirements for subdistrict board members, and the process to be used to elect such board members, as well as the length of such members' terms, and the process for filling member vacancies.

This act is substantially similar to HB 2029 (2020).
