The Missouri Senate Minute for Jan. 23: Teacher Expenses

Missouri senators look at an education measure. In this instance, the legislation would address work-related expenses for teachers. The Missouri Senate Ways and Means Committee hears Sen. Lauren Arthur of Kansas City present Senate Bill 583, legislation that seeks to allow for an income tax deduction for educator expenses…

“Ninety-four percent of teachers spend money on their classroom supplies, ” Sen. Arthur said. “These costs average $459, but they can range from a hundred dollars up to thousands of dollars.”

During committee discussion, Sen. Mike Cierpiot of Lee’s Summit adds this same scenario holds true for most school districts throughout the Show-Me State…

“I think it’s outrageous,” Sen. Cierpiot said. “In my districts, which are pretty affluent, I’ve got teachers spending their own money for supplies. As much as we spend on education, it makes me crazy.”

Committee action has not yet been taken on Senate Bill 583.
