JEFFERSON CITY — State Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer, R-Parkville, presented a Senate Resolution to U.S. Army Master Sgt. David Royer in recognition of the soldier’s life-saving response during an active shooter incident on the Centennial Bridge connecting Kansas and Missouri.
On May 27, Royer was en route to his Platte City residence after leaving his duty assignment at Fort Leavenworth when traffic stopped on the Centennial Bridge, which spans the Missouri River. Directly in front of Royer’s vehicle a subject exited his vehicle and begin firing a weapon. Royer stopped the attack by driving his vehicle into the shooter and pinning him underneath. Royer, a corrections officer with the 705th Military Police Battalion, secured the scene before police arrived.
“The word hero is overused these days, but it certainly applies to Master Sgt. Royer,” Sen. Luetkemeyer said. “His quick and decisive action saved countless lives and prevented a tragedy. It is my great honor to recognize this brave warrior and thank him for his heroism on that fateful day.”
