JEFFERSON CITY – State Sen. Brian Williams, D-University City, opposes Senate Bill 525, which allows a recovery charter high school to be operated in Kansas City for the purpose of educating students who are in recovery from a substance abuse disorder or dependency.
“Funding for our public schools is based on the number of students who attend schools in a particular district. If a student leaves their school to attend this recovery charter school, that funding essentially follows them to that charter school,” Sen. Williams said. “I do believe students battling a substance abuse disorder or dependency deserve a chance for recovery, but I am opposed to any legislation that will take funds away from public schools.”
