Senator Tony Luetkemeyer’s Amendment Shields Stimulus From State Taxes

JEFFERSON CITY — State Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer, R-Parkville, has filed legislation to shield federal coronavirus relief payments from state income taxes. The measure would exempt the $1,200 stimulus check many Missourians received when adjusted gross income is calculated.

Senator Luetkemeyer discusses pending legislation in the Senate chamber.

The one-time direct payments provided by the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act are not subject to federal taxes. Tax filers in Missouri could be liable for state income taxes unless a change is made to existing law.

“People are struggling right now and these federal checks are a lifeline,” Sen. Luetkemeyer said. “I don’t think government should be making money off of these checks just because of a quirk in Missouri’s tax code. That money should go directly into people’s pockets.”

Because the deadline for introducing new legislation has passed, Sen. Luetkemeyer presented his tax protection proposal as an amendment to an existing bill related to taxation.
