Senator Mike Bernskoetter’s Port and Deer Jerky Bills Signed by Governor

JEFFERSON CITY — State Sen. Mike Bernskoetter, R-Jefferson City, is pleased to announce the governor signed into law two of his priorities from the 2020 legislative session.

On July 14, the governor signed House Bill 1330. The bill conveys several pieces of state property, including land in Cole County to the Heartland Port Authority of Central Missouri to be turned into a port.

“With the signing of HB 1330, an important economic development project in our community is moving closer to becoming a reality,” said Sen. Bernskoetter. “A port here in Jefferson City promises new jobs and new growth opportunities for our community and area businesses, and I’m glad to see it receiving support from the governor.”

The second of Sen. Bernskoetter’s bills signed into law was House Bill 1711. This bill will allow shelf-stable, packaged venison, such as deer jerky, to be donated to food pantries in Missouri. The meat will still have to follow all safe handling and preparation standards as frozen meat, but will provide an alternative to those who can’t keep or use frozen meat.

“Missourians have a legacy of generosity through giving to programs like Share the Harvest, and HB 1711 builds on that legacy,” said Sen. Bernskoetter. “Missourians donated 348,535 pounds of venison last deer season, and my hope with this legislation is the amount of donated meat only continues to increase and reach more Missourians in need.”
