The Missouri Senate Minute for Jan. 16: Eminent Domain

Missouri senators may take another look at certain utility regulations. At issue is how utilities may expand in Missouri. Senator Justin Brown of Rolla sponsors Senate Bill 597, which — along with Senate Bill 604 — would modify provisions relating to the power of eminent domain for utility purposes…

“Regardless of whether it has received its certificate of convenience and necessity from the [Missouri] Public Service Commission,” Sen. Brown said. “Shall have the power of eminent domain for the purpose of constructing an above-ground merchant line.”

During the committee hearing, Missouri Senate Minority Floor Leader Gina Walsh of Bellefontaine Neighbors mentions these projects bring jobs…

“Regardless of where I land on this bill,” Sen. Walsh said. “Let’s not say, ‘Nobody hasn’t invested here.’ So, there’s been investments made.”

The Missouri Senate Commerce, Consumer Protection, Energy and the Environment Committee has not yet decided on Senate Bill 597 or 604.
