SB 999 - Currently, a person can be issued a visiting scholars certificate to teach in the public schools if the State Board of Education receives verification from a school district that the person will be employed as part of a business-education partnership initiative. This act repeals this requirement. Currently, retired teachers may, without losing their retirement benefit, teach full time for up to two years, provided that such retired teacher cannot be employed as a superintendent. Current law also limits the number of such retired teachers to the lesser of ten percent of the total teacher staff for that school district or five such teachers. This act authorizes such retired teachers to be employed for up to four years. The act further provides that such retired teacher may only be employed as a superintendent if the person has been retired for at least twelve months prior to such employment unless such employment is immediately necessary due to reasons detailed in the act. For non-certificated education personnel receiving a retirement benefit, the act increases the time that such person may be employed full time without losing their retirement benefit from two to four years. Finally, the total number of retired employees working for a school district shall not exceed, at any one time, the lesser of ten percent of the total number of employees for that district or ten employees.
