Current Bill Summary

SB 524 - This act provides that sports officials who officiate athletic contests at any level of competition shall not be held liable for injuries or damages related to officiating duties unless such actions are intention, willful, wanton, reckless, malicious, or grossly negligent. Additionally, this act expands the term "special victim" in the context of criminal offenses to include a trained and certified sports official assaulted during the course of his or her duties or as a result of such duties.

This act is substantially similar to HB 72 (2023) and HB 108 (2023) and contains a provision similar to HB 256 (2023), HB 1809 (2022), HB 1883 (2022), HB 79 (2021), HB 102 (2021), a provision in HCS/HBs 1809 & 1570 (2020), in HCS/SS#2/SCS/SB 523 (2020), in HCS/SS/SB 600 (2020), in HCS/SB 774 (2020), HB 319 (2019), and HCS/HB 1725 (2018).
