HB 650 -- SUMMONS FEE
CO-SPONSORS: Schwab, Richardson
COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Fees and Salaries by a vote of 6 to 0.
This bill permits sheriffs, county marshals, and other officers to collect a fee of $20 for the serving and returning of a summons for a defendant.
FISCAL NOTE: Estimated Net Cost to General Revenue Fund of $50,000 in FY 96, $50,000 in FY 97, & $50,000 in FY 98.
PROPONENTS: Supporters say that currently, sheriffs have different interpretations of what fee they can charge for serving a criminal summons because the statutes do not specifically address the issue. Some charge $3; some charge $20; some are not certain they can charge anything. This bill will clearly establish a $20 fee that will be uniform statewide.
Testifying for the bill were Representatives Richardson and Schwab.
OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
