HB 0895 School Bus Operator Permits; Solar Vehicles
Bill Summary

CCS/SCS/HCS/HB 895 and HB 986 - This act makes several changes to allow the operation of school buses by drivers over the age of 70. Bus drivers over age 70 may obtain a permit to operate a school bus, but such persons must apply annually to renew the permit and must annually pass the medical, written and vehicle operation tests.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL PERMITS - The fee for the operator's permit is increased from $3 to $11, except those renewing every year pay $3.75. The qualifications for bus operator permits are increased with respect to criminal violations. The Highway Patrol may obtain information from the FBI to aid in checking criminal records; the record check must be made and cleared within 5 days (currently 30). "Head Start" school bus signs are required on new buses used for Head Start programs.

LICENSING OF SOLAR POWERED VEHICLES - Any motor vehicle assembled by a two or four year institution of higher education exclusively utilizing "solar power" and built to compete in a national competition shall be registered and titled by the Director of Revenue. The plate issued by the Director shall be the collegiate plate of the institution and shall display the term "solar" in a manner prescribed by the Director.

The act has an Emergency Clause.
