Born in Springfield, Ill. Graduate of Wichita High School East, Wichita State University and University of Kansas (B.S. marketing and business administration).

Married Diana Radovic Melter. They have three sons: Craig Melter, Steven and Brian, and five grandchildren. Served in the U.S. Air Force.

Member: Concordia Lutheran Church; Human Care Board of Concordia; Kirkwood Area and Fenton chambers of commerce; Kansas University Alumni Association; St. Louis County Pachyderms; Republican clubs in Bonhomme, Clayton, Gravois, Jefferson, Missouri River and Queeny townships. Elected to the House: 1972-1988. Elected to the Senate: 1990 (special election), 1992.
