The Kansas City transportation sales tax will expire on December
31, 1997.  This substitute extends the tax to December 31, 1999.

FISCAL NOTE:  Estimated Net Increase to General Revenue Fund of
$150,045 for FY 1998, $312,094 for FY 1999, and $162,288 for FY
2000.

COMMITTEE ACTION:  Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Urban
Affairs by a vote of 8 to 2.

The Kansas City transportation sales tax will expire on December
31, 1997.  This substitute extends the tax to December 31, 1999.

FISCAL NOTE:  Estimated Net Increase to General Revenue Fund of
$150,045 in FY 1998, $312,094 in FY 1999, & $162,288 in FY 2000.

PROPONENTS:  Supporters say that the transportation tax is
important to Kansas City, and a 2-year extension provides for
periodic legislative review.

Testifying for the bill were Representative Thompson; Greater
Kansas City Chamber of Commerce; Kansas City Area Transportation
Authority; City of Kansas City; and Amalgamated Transit Union
1287.

OPPONENTS:  There was no opposition voiced to the committee.

INTRODUCED

HB 114 -- Kansas City Transportation  Sales Tax

Sponsor:  Thompson

This bill extends the sunset provision of the Kansas City
transportation sales tax from December 31, 1997, to December 31,
2001, deleting the requirement that the authority be in
compliance with handicap accessibility under the terms of the
Americans with Disabilities Act.
