HB 787 -- SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASSIFICATION AND DEFINITIONS (Barry) The bill clarifies several definitions relating to schools, changing references from 6-member districts to 7-member districts. The bill also deletes the definition of "householder" and modifies the definitions of "elementary school" and "high school" to permit such schools to be limited to just one grade. Currently, schools must contain 2 or more grades. The bill also makes technical changes to several definitions. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds.
HB 787 -- SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASSIFICATION AND DEFINITIONS SPONSOR: Barry COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on Education-Elementary and Secondary by a vote of 19 to 0. The bill clarifies several definitions relating to schools, changing references from 6-member districts to 7-member districts. The bill also deletes the definition of "householder" and modifies the definitions of "elementary school" and "high school" to permit such schools to be limited to just one grade. Currently, schools must contain 2 or more grades. The bill also makes technical changes to several definitions. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that this bill updates school-- related definitions. In particular, the modified definitions would make it permissible to start a high school and add a grade level each year, instead of taking at least two years away from an existing school.
