COMMITTEE
HB 787 -- SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASSIFICATION AND DEFINITIONS
SPONSOR: Barry
COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee
on Education-Elementary and Secondary by a vote of 19 to 0.
The bill clarifies several definitions relating to schools,
changing references from 6-member districts to 7-member
districts. The bill also deletes the definition of
"householder" and modifies the definitions of "elementary
school" and "high school" to permit such schools to be limited
to just one grade. Currently, schools must contain 2 or more
grades. The bill also makes technical changes to several
definitions.
FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds.
PROPONENTS: Supporters say that this bill updates school--
related definitions. In particular, the modified definitions
would make it permissible to start a high school and add a grade
level each year, instead of taking at least two years away from
an existing school.
Testifying for the bill was Representative Barry.
OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
