Current Bill Summary

SB 493 - This act revises medical record copying fees and repeals section 191.233, which requires that copy fees be increased or decreased based on the Health Care Financing Administration Market Basket Survey.

Currently, a patient may make a written request that his or her medical records be copied and forwarded as long as the request is consistent with the patient's condition and treatment. This bill would set medical record copying fees at the following:

Handling fee = $20.00 1-25 pages = $ 1.00 per page 26-100 pages = $ .50 per page 101 or more pages = $ .35 per page

After January 1, 2002, copy fees shall be adjusted in accordance with the Implicit Price Deflator (IPD) for Personal Consumption Expenditures, which is a measure of inflation determined each year by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Upon evaluating the IPD, the Department of Insurance shall calculate current fees and report them to the Secretary of State, who will record the change in the Missouri Register by March 1 of each year.
