COMMITTEE

HB 646 -- WEIGH STATIONS

CO-SPONSORS: Hampton, Koller, Leake

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee
on Transportation by a vote of 20 to 0.

Currently, all commercial motor vehicles, except those licensed
for a gross weight of not more than 12,000 pounds, must stop at
an official weigh station. This bill increases that exemption
from 12,000 to 18,000 pounds.

FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that more and more people are
driving pick-up trucks, especially for towing purposes, and such
vehicles are being registered for higher weights because of
towing. At the same time, traffic is growing at a rate of
approximately 5% a year. This legislation will help eliminate
congestion at the scales.

Testifying for the bill were Representative Hampton; and
Missouri Motor Carriers Association.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.

Robert Triplett, Legislative Analyst
