Pride In Our Counties |
Recently, I had another opportunity to spend time with some of the amazing citizens of Ripley County. The Ripley County Fair, held this year from Sept. 4-7, managed to maintain its many traditions and provide wonderful activities for all ages.
The weather was perfect for the fair. The temperatures were tame compared to the heat from the previous weekend. I always enjoy the atmosphere of county fairs; the sense of community and family is evident at every turn. The Ripley County Fair was no different. I especially enjoyed touring the livestock barns and the FFA students who worked so hard to do such an outstanding job with their animals. It was a delight to chat with a few of the young men and women in the barns against the iconic sounds of the horseshoe pitching competition. The clanging of the metal shoes against the pins is certainly distinct. However, the other activities of the day were just as enjoyable. I had the chance to tour the many different types of exhibits, from arts and crafts to home economics and spend a few minutes at a good, old-fashioned demolition derby. I relished visiting with friends, both new and old.
While attending the fair, Rep. Steve Cookson, R-Poplar Bluff, and I combined our resources and purchased a hog from the livestock auction. We decided there were definitely some young people who could get some use out of that purchase, so we donated it to the local Toys for Tots campaign to use as a fundraiser meal. I hope they enjoy some delicious food and raise money for those children in need.
I want to thank the citizens of Ripley County for welcoming me to this event and letting me enjoy the hometown camaraderie. It is always a pleasure to be included in local happenings, and I was glad to be able to give a little bit back to the community. I look forward to visiting again soon.
