Legislation Sponsored by Sen. Jamilah Nasheed Creating Education Reform Set to Become Law
|
JEFFERSON CITY — The first education reform measure to pass the General Assembly in almost a decade, Senate Bill 125, sponsored by Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis, was signed by the governor today (7-12). The bill will streamline the dismissal process for ineffective teachers, thereby giving teachers greater accountability.
“The St. Louis School District employs many dedicated and wonderful educators,” Sen. Nasheed said. “This legislation is going to ensure that effective teachers remain in our schools to assist our students, while giving struggling teachers the opportunity to move forward to new challenges.”
The legislation also puts what is known as the “St. Louis Plan” into statute, making teacher dismissals jointly authorized by the teachers union and the school administration.
With the governor’s signature, SB 125 will take effect Aug. 28.
