Senate Judiciary Chair Bob Dixon Unveils Updated Committee Web Page
Calls for Public Input on Criminal Code

JEFFERSON CITY — Today (3-21), Sen. Bob Dixon, R-Springfield, chair of the Senate Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee, announced updates to the committee web page designed to allow Missouri citizens to share their thoughts and comments on the revision of the Missouri Criminal Code, currently being considered by the General Assembly.

“Using technology, the committee can benefit from greater input than we might otherwise have,” said Sen. Dixon. “More Missourians will have an opportunity to make their voices heard, enabling lawmakers to identify better the proper balance between keeping citizens safe and dealing justly with those who commit crimes.”

Originally enacted in the late 1970s, the Missouri Criminal Code has been the subject of a multi-year revision effort by The Missouri Bar Criminal Code Revision Subcommittee. The Senate legislation (Senate Bill 253) is based in part on the subcommittee’s recommendations. In addition to the information available online for SB 253, the Senate Judiciary Committee web page has been updated to include these features:

“A clear, concise and understandable criminal code contributes to a strong, effective criminal justice system,” stated Sen. Dixon. “The effective administration of criminal justice also protects liberty and promotes a free society.”

The Judiciary Committee is currently conducting a series of informational hearings on SB 253, concluding with the consideration of public testimony on the proposed changes. Information on future hearings will be available through the Senate homepage, under the Senate Hearings link.
