JEFFERSON CITY — Today (8-28), many of the new laws passed during the 2013 session take effect, including the Missouri Works Program, sponsored by Sen. Bob Dixon, R-Springfield. Missouri Works hones the state’s economic development tools and provides greater efficiency, flexibility and depth by consolidating four existing state economic development programs into a single, streamlined initiative. Originally filed by Sen. Dixon as Senate Bill 323, it passed the General Assembly as part of a larger omnibus bill, House Bill 184.
“Putting Missouri on a sustained path to economic prosperity and promoting job creation has been one of my top priorities in the Legislature,” said Sen. Dixon. “Growing our economy includes encouraging new investment and job creation. By sharpening our economic development tools and cutting red tape to improve efficiency, we can position Missouri as an excellent place for entrepreneurs and businesses to grow, expand or relocate in our state and remain competitive.”
“The Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce works to identify opportunities for area businesses to grow and promote our region as an ideal location for new businesses,” stated Jim Anderson, Chamber president and CEO. “Missouri Works will be another important tool in our efforts to build a stronger regional economy, and we appreciate the leadership of Sen. Dixon and the entire Southwest Missouri delegation in securing its passage.”
The new law establishes a single program, Missouri Works, in place of four existing programs, providing a single set of definitions, procedures, and eligibility and reporting requirements. This new economic development tool was developed to allow Missouri to better compete for a greater number of quality projects, expanding business and creating quality jobs. It also encourages job creation by a wide spectrum of businesses throughout the state, and creates a more effective job retention program.
