Summer has been busy as usual, and I’m sure the same goes for each of you. Rural Missouri is so reliant on weather, but unfortunately it’s one of those things we have no control over. Tourism, agriculture and even employment are regulated to a certain degree by the changes of our summer weather. I hope the weather will continue to cooperate, because so much of our summer activities and work depends on it.
It has been exciting to attend the many gatherings that I have had the privilege to be invited to this summer. I have participated in community forums, visited with local organizations and met with agriculture groups. I would like to thank those who made the trip to Jefferson City to participate in “Northeast Missouri Local Government Day” on June 25. The event was well attended and we learned a lot, had some fun and good food. My office has been busy answering constituent questions and helping the citizens of the 18th Senatorial District, one of the largest geographic senate districts in the state, and we will continue to be here for you.
For the rest of the summer, I plan on enjoying several county fairs in the district and celebrating Independence Day. I’ve always enjoyed fair season because it provides a good opportunity to highlight how important agriculture is to our communities and state. County fairs also help educate new generations of farmers by continuing time-honored traditions of showing livestock, produce and new technology. There’s always great food and entertainment, too.
As Independence Day nears, we are reminded of the many difficult fights our country has had for freedom throughout history. So many lives and so much blood have been shed for this great nation, and we should take the time to remember why.
It has become too easy to take freedom for granted. Our young people need to be told the stories of our country’s founding. They need to understand that the words “Freedom isn’t free” are not just meant for bumper stickers and t-shirts; rather, they have very true meaning and should never be forgotten. We need to embrace our country’s history and tradition and continue to work to protect it.
So as we celebrate with family and friends, please remember the roles we all share in defending our liberties. Take a moment to pray for those who are willing to give the ultimate sacrifice to safeguard our freedoms and relish the importance of celebrating the 4th of July.
As always, if you have any questions or comments, please contact my office. Thank you and have a happy and safe Independence Day.
