Sunday, Aug. 11, is “811 Day” — a day set aside to remind everyone of the importance of utilizing 811 — the national “call before you dig” telephone number.
In Missouri, people may be more familiar with 1-800-DIG-RITE (344-7483), which is another way to get the same information that 811 provides. Also, you can go to www.mo1call.com or www.Call811.com. You might be surprised at what is buried underground, from water, sewer and gas lines to power and cable television lines. Most of these are marked, but not always, which is why it is important to call or go online before you start to dig in your yard or on your property.
For everyone from professional excavators at a work site to residents digging on their own property, it is essential to call 811 at least two to three business days before the work begins. This advance notification allows time for underground lines to be accurately located and marked.
As I mentioned in my last column, back-to-school time is almost here. Along with children returning to school comes the increase of buses on our roadways. Please remember to slow down, not only in school zones, but everywhere. There will be more vehicles on the roads, people walking and children riding their bicycles — especially in the mornings and afternoons. Be careful on our rural roads. A driver who is speeding may not see a bus stopped on a winding country road.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office. Thank you. |
