JEFFERSON CITY — Today (3-27), Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis, skillfully presented legislation for final approval in the Missouri Senate. Senate Bill 731 received a passing vote, sending the legislation to the House for similar consideration.
The legislation would expand the definition of nuisance by adding that property affecting the values of neighboring buildings is considered a nuisance, and the actions failing to maintain said property lead to liability for the nuisance.
“While it is an honor to have a bill you sponsor pass the upper chamber,” said Sen. Nasheed, “fighting to protect those who maintain their homes and neighborhoods is what I do, giving a voice to the voiceless. Today is a victory for neighborhoods in St. Louis.”
Also today, Senate Bill 532 was heard by and passed out of the House Rules Committee with overwhelming support. With this vote, SB 532 will be brought before the House for debate.
SB 532 defines a relative caregiver as a competent adult related to the child in question by blood, marriage or adoption. It gives a relative caregiver the right to make medical and educational decisions for a minor.
“In today’s world, where more and more children are raised by other family members, I wanted to ensure the caregiver’s role in our state’s most populous areas,” Sen. Nasheed said. “As I am all too aware, the caregiver role is often thankless from all sides. It is my hope to avoid future problems related to the medical and educational well-being of those in caregivers’ custody — the building blocks to ensure a bright future for all Missouri’s children.”
