Senator Jamilah Nasheed Calls on
U.S. Attorney General to Investigate
St. Louis Shooting
|
JEFFERSON CITY — Today (8-26), Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis, sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, asking him to investigate the situation surrounding the death of 25-year-old Kajieme Powell. Powell lost his life in an altercation with two St. Louis police officers.
“When our communities have lost their young men without a clear reason, it is essential that we look into the policies and practices of our local police departments,” said Sen. Nasheed. “Our children have more to offer the world than merely the potential to be gunned down in their own streets.”
In the letter to Attorney General Holder, Sen. Nasheed asks him to investigate the procedures and policies of the St. Louis Police Department as they pertain to the firing of weapons at persons.
“These past few weeks have been difficult for any number of people in this community,” said Sen. Nasheed. “We have lost the bright light of futures still to be lived. The only possible redemption we can receive from these similar tragedies is the possibility of a clear view of what has happened in the past and will not be allowed to happen again tomorrow.”
