Senator Jamilah Nasheed Demands New Director of Public Safety Take Swift and Fair Action Against Former Officer

JEFFERSON CITY — Today (9-16), Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis, presented a letter to newly appointed Director of Public Safety, Daniel Isom III, asking for an investigation into the peace officer license held by former St. Ann Police lieutenant Ray Albers.

“My intention in writing this letter is not to seek punishment for the sake of the punishment alone, but instead to ask for the appropriate disciplinary action to fit the abuse of authority,” said Sen. Nasheed. “These are difficult times in our communities and we need to stand together, police and neighbor, not allowing those who believe themselves to be above the law to ever sit in a position of power again.”

Mr. Albers was videoed pointing an assault rifle at unarmed protestors during the Ferguson unrest. This blatant threat to citizens, as well as documented verbal assaults, reportedly led to Mr. Albers resigning from the St. Ann Police Department.

Senator Nasheed states in her letter of request that she was loathe to bring this up to someone so recently placed in office. However, such matters need a rapid response from authorities in order to prevent these injustices from occurring again.
