JEFFERSON CITY — Senator Will Kraus, R-Lee’s Summit, today (5-6) praised members of the Missouri General Assembly for overriding the governor’s veto of Senate Bill 509, which provides broad-based tax relief to Missouri residents and small businesses.
“I want to thank the leadership of both the Senate and the House for their steadfast commitment to making sure SB 509 became law,” said Sen. Kraus. “I am also very thankful to the House sponsor, Rep. Andrew Koenig, who has worked closely with me for two years to pass tax reform that would matter. Every senator and representative who voted for the override should know they are a part of something very special.”
Senator Kraus watched from the side gallery as the House took the historic vote today. Following yesterday’s 23-8 vote in the Senate, the House overrode the veto with a 109-46 vote.
“This was truly a team effort,” said Sen. Kraus. “The support that legislators received from the business community, citizen groups and others was overwhelming. The people of Missouri spoke loud and clear to both chambers.”
SB 509 will take effect in January 2017. The first tax rate cuts and deductions will only take place if revenue from the previous fiscal year exceeds revenue from the highest of the three prior years.
“These built-in protections will make sure that Missouri’s revenues keep increasing,” said Sen. Kraus. “In the event of another economic downturn, the cuts will halt until revenues increase again.”
Senator Kraus is in his first term representing eastern Jackson County, and is the chairman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee.
