The Munzlinger Minutes

Back to Work At the State Capitol

After only a few weeks away, lawmakers have returned to Jefferson City. However, instead of a few days, we are here through the middle of May for the 2014 regular legislative session.

As always, we need your input. Missouri, like most of the Midwest, tends to be a year to a year and a half behind the rest of the country — in terms of the state of the economy. Since this is the case, our state is making strides in escaping the recession, where other states may be further along than we are. It is our job in the state Legislature to take what we have learned from our constituents and put it into practice, which is why we spend more time at home than we do in Jefferson City.

The good thing about the location of our State Capitol is it is in the middle of the state. While some people may have to spend several hours getting to Jefferson City, for most of us in the northeastern part of our state, the drive is not too long. I always appreciate seeing friends and neighbors. Your visits mean a great deal to me, because I know you have to take time away from work and family to come here and deliver your message — not only to me — but to all of your elected officials. It is truly democracy in action.

Since this is the Second Regular Session of the 97th General Assembly, we already have our committees named, which means we will start hearing bills a bit earlier than last year. I mention this for two reasons. First, so you know that we got started as soon as we gaveled in on the first day. Second, in the event you decide you would like to come to Jefferson City, make sure you contact my office in advance. This way, they can check my schedule and make sure I will be available to see you. I would hate knowing I missed seeing someone from back home, because I was busy with another meeting.

I also want to take a moment and remind you to be careful driving. This winter has been one for the record books, and we are not even a month into the season. Watch out for everybody on the roads this winter.

Also, I want to congratulate Schuyler R-1 5th grade students who recently participated in a national math competition. Schuyler came in first in the state of Missouri and ranked 31st in the entire nation. The students answered a variety of math questions ranging from addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and money. They do not solve word problems, since these are very fast-paced modules. Their goal is to correctly answer the questions first while competing against three to five other participants from other schools. This is an excellent achievement by our students. Congratulations, Schuyler R-1.

Also, if you know of any school district would like to participate in our awards for students, they can call the office for more information regarding the Outstanding Attendance and Junior Justice Awards. It is free for the schools to have their students recognized, and it would be great if we had more districts participate.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office. Thank you.
