Senate Advances First Priority of the 2015 Regular Session
Measure Will Help Secure the Future Viability of Agriculture in the State

JEFFERSON CITY— Missouri senators once again showed their support for one of the biggest industries in the state today (1-29) as they advanced Senate Bill 12 to the House. The legislation was a top priority Senate Leader Tom Dempsey, R-St. Charles, designated at the beginning of the session.

“For many people in Missouri, farming is more than just a business; it’s a way of life,” said Dempsey. “This legislation will help to secure the future viability of agriculture in the state.”

The measure offers an insurance program for dairy farmers and also establishes the Missouri Dairy Scholars Program to provide college scholarships for students in agriculture-related degree programs. Bill sponsor Sen. Brian Munzlinger, R-Williamstown, said the bill is vital to the dairy industry, and the sooner the state is able to provide farmers with assistance, the better.

“Agriculture is the driving force for the state’s economy,” said Munzlinger. “It is the food, fuel and fiber of Missouri. We need to protect this industry and help it continue to grow.”

“The Missouri State Senate has demonstrated a strong commitment to make sure our state’s actions and programs stimulate the economy,” said Senate Majority Leader Ron Richard, R-Joplin. “Programs that have a positive return on investment not only benefit Missouri’s overall economy, but also create a friendly environment for agriculture in our state.”
