General Assembly Passes Legislation Sponsored by Senator Nasheed Benefiting Harris-Stowe State

JEFFERSON CITY — Today, (5-6) Senate Bill 334 – a bill that would put Harris-Stowe State University on the same level playing field with every other state university – was truly agreed to and finally passed on its way to the governor’s desk for his signature.

The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis, broadens the degree programs that Harris-Stowe State University may offer. Currently, Harris-Stowe is only authorized to offer undergraduate degree programs with an emphasis on selected professional disciplines. The bill also allows Harris-Stowe to offer baccalaureate degree and graduate degree programs, upon approval of the Coordinating Board for Higher Education.

“The fact that both parties can come together to realize the significance of this legislation is great,” Sen. Nasheed declared. “Senate Bill 334 is an extremely important bill for me. This bill was one of my top priorities this session, and it’s good to see it pass. Harris-Stowe State University is a pillar in the community, and it provides valuable opportunities for its students to become well-educated members of society,” expressed Sen. Nasheed

Senate Bill 334 will award expanded degree-granting authority to Harris-Stowe State University and allow them to grant master’s degrees.

"Now that it has passed, the City of St. Louis can begin to build a stronger foundation for higher education and this historically black college and university that will continue to improve for decades. I’m just proud to be a part of this new era for Harris-Stowe State University,” said Sen. Nasheed.
