Friends & Neighbors,
This newsletter contains a documentary about the Pruitt-Igoe housing complex in St. Louis as well as a 7-part investigative series done by a team of St. Louis Post Dispatch reporters in 1989. The documentary, made in 2011 by director Chad Freidrichs, tells the story of the Pruitt-Igoe public housing complex in St. Louis and its eventual demise in 1976. The film illustrates the racial and economic forces that played an impact in the complex's destruction and the effect it had on the impoverished residents who called it home. "The Pruitt-Igoe Myth" does an excellent job of detailing St. Louis' history of racial, social and economic oppression in public housing.
"The Pruitt-Igoe Myth" (2011)
The investigative newspaper series, titled "Legacy of the Bomb," focuses on the harmful nuclear waste dumps in St. Louis County, and the horrific impact they have had on our home. Though the story is almost 30 years old, the narrative still rings true today. Please give this movie and series your attention as they detail the sordid past of one of our area's most tragic tales.
Sincerely,
Maria Chappelle-Nadal
