Senator Tony Luetkemeyer’s Seniors’ Tax Relief Bill Receives Governor’s Signature
JEFFERSON CITY — Tax protections for Missouri’s senior citizens, sponsored by Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer, were signed into law by the governor on Thursday, July 6. Senate Bill 190 freezes property taxes on the primary residences of seniors and exempts Social Security benefits from state income taxes.
Senate Bill 190 allows counties to adopt ordinances that would grant a tax credit to seniors, offsetting increased tax liability for residential property imposed once the taxpayer is eligible for Social Security benefits.
“I sponsored this legislation because I believe that senior citizens, many living on fixed incomes, should not be taxed out of their homes by rapidly rising property tax assessments,” Sen. Luetkemeyer said. “By holding their property taxes at a reasonable amount and eliminating state income taxes on Social Security benefits, we are protecting our seniors from the effects of rampant inflation.”
Prior to the passage of Senate Bill 190, Missouri was one of only 11 states to tax Social Security benefits.
