Connecting People with Agriculture

The smells, the sounds and the sights. I say it every year and it never becomes less true, fair season is one of my favorite times of the year. It is always fantastic to see people from a wide variety of backgrounds and circumstances come together in fellowship and honoring the agricultural tradition of mid-Missouri.

Agriculture is not the day-to-day way of life for the majority of our community’s families as it was generations ago. For those who still live that unpredictable life, however, fairs are a way to showcase the hard work that is put in and how that devotion continues to make a difference at each person’s table. Kids who have never seen a cow, sheep, pig or chicken up close are able to learn about where their food comes from and the people who serve others by taking on the monumental task of raising crops and livestock.

I especially enjoy seeing the pride on kids’ and teenagers’ faces when they showcase their raised livestock or produce in front of impressed onlookers. Whether they come from a generational farming family or have gotten into agriculture through programs like 4-H, having someone pay for the product of their commitment and hard work brings a very special sense of accomplishment.

I hope you were able to attend your county fair. If not, don’t forget that the Missouri State Fair kicks off this week on Aug. 10, runs through the Aug. 20 and is less than an hour away. I encourage you to visit Sedalia if you’ve never attended this fantastic experience before.
