A Season of Returning

While it certainly may not feel like it with temperatures bumping against triple digits, fall is just around the corner and many of us are heading into a season of returning. In a few weeks, my colleagues and I will return to work at the Missouri Capitol during the annual, constitutionally mandated Veto Session. I will speak more on this in the weeks to come.

All of our young people and teachers are also making their return to schools across mid-Missouri. It brings me great joy to see so many social media posts showcasing young people taking that next step in their education, moving up grades and schools. I believe we have some of the best elementary, middle and high schools in the state, and I have no doubt that these students, whether their smiles in those photos are real or not, will gain an amazing education and accomplish great things this school year.

It is also impossible to talk about the amazing schooling in our districts without properly appreciating the world-class educators and support staff who lead those schools and classrooms. We must do everything we can to support these institutions. I’m proud that our Fiscal Year 2024 budget fully funds school transportation costs, increases starting pay for K-12 teachers through a grant program and boosts college and university funding by 7 percent.

I wish all of our students, teachers and faculty well during the 2023-2024 school year and encourage them all to work hard, stay focused and achieve great things.
