Then it was Over

If you’ve spent any time in the Missouri Capitol, you know that it really is two different buildings depending on whether the Legislature is in session or not. For months now the halls have remained relatively quiet except for groups taking tours and visitors taking in all the sights and gorgeous architecture. Last week the buzz returned as the General Assembly once again gaveled in for the constitutionally required veto session.

Each year, senators and representatives return in September to review all the bills and budgetary line items that the governor rejected. These vetoes can be overturned by a two-thirds majority vote in each chamber. While the House of Representatives did take up and successfully override 14 budget items that were vetoed by the governor, the handler of those bills in the Senate did not make the motion to override, so they were not considered in the upper chamber. The veto session on Wednesday lasted just a matter of hours.

As we turn our eyes to January, and the beginning of the 2024 legislative session, I am planning to bring back several of the budget items that impact the 6th Senatorial District that were vetoed. Restoring that funding is crucial to several major projects in the area and I will make it a priority to work with the governor and find equitable solutions.

The next several months will be spent gathering information and meeting with constituents, learning what issues are impacting you and what your representatives can do to improve lives across the state, continue to grow the economy and build a better Missouri for the generations of tomorrow.
