Week of Jan. 29, 2024

Progress in the Senate

Silver-Haired Legislator Jody Crawford, Liberty, met with Senator Hoskins to discuss priorities for seniors.

Senator Hoskins always looks forward to meeting with Youth with Vision students from Senate District 21 including 2024 participants from Clay and Ray Counties.

Greetings! I’m happy to announce great progress in the Senate this week. Our tireless efforts have finally led to action to protect the Missouri State Constitution.

My initiative petition (IP) reform-focused Senate Joint Resolution 48 was heard in the Local Government and Elections Committee this past week along with eleven other bills seeking to help protect our constitution. Each one of these bills was proposed in an effort to protect our constitution from being changed or altered too easily, especially through the influence of out-of-state interests.

Ultimately, a compromise was found in Senate Joint Resolution 74 in order to speed the process along and it was voted out of committee with a vote of 5-2. This IP reform bill will require the majority of not just the state but also in a majority of state House of Representative districts to approve an initiative petition to have its laws added to our Missouri State Constitution.

Now, the bill will move to the Senate floor to be debated and passed onto the House. At the end of the day though, it will be the people who vote to pass this bill that will ensure our constitution is protected.

As part of the agreement to move IP reform forward, gubernatorial appointments also

moved forward without further delay. I look forward to seeing these citizens begin their new roles and work to make our state better.

Finally, I had many supportive citizens come and visit me and offer their support this week. I was glad to welcome constituents from Clay, Cooper, Howard, Lafayette, Ray, and Saline Counties, as well as good friends from Johnson County. In addition, I welcomed various organizations including members of the American Lung Association, Missouri Association of County Developmental Disability Services, Good Dads, Missouri Society of Professional Engineers and Missouri Corn Growers into the Senate District 21 office.

I will continue to keep you updated on the movement of IP reform through the legislative body as well as the other legislation I work on as they are heard in committee in the coming weeks.

As always, I appreciate hearing your comments, opinions and concerns. Please feel free to contact me in Jefferson City at 573-751-4302. You may also email me at denny.hoskins@senate.mo.gov.
