From Committees to the Senate Floor
This week the Senate has made good headway on various important legislation. The start of session can be tumultuous, but as the work continues, you can expect consistent updates every week on what I’m working on and how it is progressing through the General Assembly. One of the top priorities the Senate has focused on these past couple weeks is initiative petition (IP) reform. The various bills pertaining to IP reform were heard in the Local Government and Elections Committee this week, with Senate Joint Resolution 74 voted out of committee. This IP reform bill is now on the Senate calendar and we are excited to debate and perfect it in the coming weeks. This joint resolution will make it harder for out-of-state interests to influence our state constitution and make sure rural voters are properly represented by requiring not just a majority of voters statewide to approve an initiative petition but also the majority of voters in the majority of State House of Representatives districts. Once it has passed through the General Assembly, it will be put on a statewide ballot for you to vote on. My own Senate Bill 799 was placed on the Senate calendar this week. If passed, it would lower personal property tax on cars through a depreciating twelve-year schedule. I’m excited to provide tax relief for Missourians, especially as used car values rise. At some point, you should be able to own your vehicle and not pay “rent” to the government. This is a step in the right direction. I will continue to keep you updated on what happens here in the Senate and ensure that your priorities and concerns are heard here in the General Assembly. As always, feel free to contact my offices with any questions you might have, and feel free to stop by if you find yourself in Jefferson City. My door is always open.
