Week of April 2, 2024

A Time of Joy

It was wonderful to have (L-R) Liberty High School Senior Piper Lee come with her Fine Arts Instructor, Amanda Phipps, to receive her award for her artwork in the 2024 Senate Art Exhibit.

Greetings! I hope you enjoyed the Easter weekend and had the opportunity to be with your families and worship. This is a very special time of year for me and I appreciate the time to focus on my faith and think about how I can serve my fellow Missourians here in the Senate.

One important issue discussed on the Senate Floor this week was Senate Bill 739. This bill limits where a landfill can be placed by requiring the approval of any communities within one mile of it. This will help to protect our communities and make sure that outside interests do not take advantage of them.

I am also happy to share that Senate Bill 894, which is the same as my Senate Bill 825, passed this week. This bill establishes various acts and organizations to help innovative businesses start and flourish here in the state of Missouri, including the “Regulatory Sandbox Act.” I am very proud to see this bill make its way out of the Senate and to the Missouri House of Representatives where it will hopefully pass swiftly.

In addition, Senate Joint Resolution 50 was passed through the Senate. This joint resolution would limit the state income tax rate from rising above 5.5% if approved by voters. I believe this would help keep the rising budget from spiraling out of control and keep more money in the hands of Missourians.

Senate Joint Resolution 78 was perfected in the Senate. This proposed amendment, if approved by voters, would protect our elections by ensuring that only U.S. citizens who live in Missouri can vote in our elections. It also adds multiple provisions to avoid voter fraud, such as prohibiting ranked choice voting and requiring paper ballots. Our elections are intrinsic to our ideals as a nation and must be protected at all costs. This bill will do just that and I believe it is a necessary step forward.

I enjoyed meeting with Grundy County Presiding Commissioner Philip Ray regarding current legislative activity.

I was happy to meet with Pioneer Trails Regional Planning Commission Director Norm Lucas, Deputy Director Christopher Hess and Community Developer Janet Luetjen.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss any concerns feel free to come by my office. I always love the opportunities I have to meet with my constituents.

As always, I appreciate hearing your comments, opinions and concerns. Please feel free to contact me in Jefferson City at 573-751-4302. You may also email me at denny.hoskins@senate.mo.gov.

I was honored to have the members of the Lawson Select High School Choir visit me along with their instructor Amanda Covey on Fine Arts Education Day at the Capitol. They were invited to perform in the First Floor Rotunda by the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education.
