Governor Signs Senator Tony Luetkemeyer’s Senior Property Tax Relief Expansion Bill
JEFFERSON CITY — On Tuesday, the governor signed Senate Bill 756. This legislation, sponsored by Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer, R-Parkville, expands a property tax freeze for seniors in participating counties. Senate Bill 756 extends the relief provided by Senate Bill 190, which was sponsored by Sen. Luetkemeyer and signed into law in 2023. Senate Bill 190 created a tax freeze for all seniors 62 and older who receive Social Security benefits. The new bill amends SB 190 to also assist any senior who receives their retirement income from pensions, such as teachers, police and firefighters. In addition, there are a few technical updates to SB 190 to encourage its adoption in more counties. “This is a win for seniors throughout the state,” Luetkemeyer said. “Under this new legislation, there will be more seniors protected from being priced out of their own homes by property taxes.” This bill will go into effect Aug. 28, 2024.
