Remembering 9/11

Next week marks 23 years since the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001. That day was a stark and devastating blow to the nation, leading to the loss of nearly 3,000 lives and causing us, as a nation, to lose our sense of security in the world. The consequences of that day continue to be felt throughout every aspect of American life, from the personal grief many have felt to the national security of our nation. Most profoundly Sept. 11 has become a day of remembrance and reflection on how the actions of a few could have such profound impact on this nation.

Over time, I believe we have all processed that feeling of vulnerability, and how the idea that terrorism was something that happened to other countries, but not us, has been lost. It is remarkable that in the years since 9/11 we have not seen another attack of that magnitude on our home soil. I am grateful that men and women of law enforcement and of the military are willing to continue to serve and protect us.

Sept. 11 serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the strength of the national unity in the face of adversity. Those horrible attacks united us as a nation with a common purpose. We must never forget the importance of Sept. 11, the sacrifice of those to protect us, and the higher calling that can unite us all as Americans.
